The Harrell-Mackenzie Quarter Horses breeder production sale is an annual highlight on the Northwest region's equine event calendar. These outfits are reputation cattle ranching operations whose families are well-respected horsemen as breeders and arena competitors. Recognized for the outstanding ranch and arena prospects they produce, one of the region's most impressive stallion batteries, bands of high quality broodmares and a well-regarded ranch training regimen are the foundation for the Harrell-Mackenzie success.
Bob & Becky Harrell and Wannie & Beth Mackenzie, Baker City, Ore., joined forces to present their 12th annual Performance Horse Prospect Sale. Event activities included a pre-sale day preview at the Mackenzie Ranch arena that showcased the coming two-yr-old prospects under saddle in riding and reining patterns and in cattle and rope work. The horses were then presented at auction as a highlight of the annual Harrell Hereford Ranch production sale where a "sellout" nine-state crowd was at ringside to evaluate the offering.
The Harrell-Mackenzie programs have blended proven performance, speed and cowhorse lines to produce versatile, talented, all-around athletes that excel on the ranch and in the arena. A high profile stallion battery features Payin Doc (Paid By Chic, NCHA LTE $142,000 and World's Greatest Horseman Champion), Billy Red Baron (Mr. Baron Red, AQHA Superhorse), Frenchmans Bully (Frenchmans Guy, a 10-yr leading barrel horse sire) and Star Like Freckles (Grays Starlight, $11.4 million progeny earnings). Their beautiful broodmare bands are rich in proven Pitzer Ranch, Sun Frost and Weiscamp blood.
Highlighting a very successful sale was another first class offering of 2008 coming two-yr-old geldings and broodmare caliber fillies that were presented as nicely started, ranch ridden, futurity, rodeo and ranch prospects. Ranchers, arena cowboys and trainers stepped up to invest in the quality, proven talent and powerful bloodlines they have come to expect from these programs. With fancy prospects selling to fit every good horseman's budget, it was another successful event for the Harrell and Mackenzie families who are committed to breeding, riding and competing on great performance Quarter Horses.
